In 1851, a New York bookkeeper named George D. Lyman observed the same absurd ritual each afternoon: porters carried bags of coins and bundles of checks bank to bank down Wall Street, settling by hand, a fortune exposed to error and theft. Lyman's fix: send everything through one central office and settle the net. On October 11, 1853, in the basement of 14 Wall Street, 52 banks cleared $22.6 million in a single sitting.
